Barenaked Barbies

OK, I promise this is the last “family” post for a while, but I could not resist sharing this one. As most of you know we have 1 girl and 3 boys. However, if you had to guess our girl count based off of the number of barbies in the house, you would probably say at least 7 girls lived here. Sara LOVES her dolls and every time we turn around it seems we are tripping over one. That’s all fine and good, but the thing that freaks me out are the naked Barbies. They give me the heebie-jeebies. They are creepy and they weird me out. (Jo feels the same way and I’m sure Luke will be complaining soon enough.)

Anyway, Danielle convinced Sara that it would be great if they all had “swimsuits” on. Sara loved the idea because she too is not a fan of naked Barbies and Jo and Luke even got in on the project.

A few before and after shots of our Sharpie Swimsuit collection for your enjoyment.

Here is the whole set. We even did two of them to match Sara’s swimsuits.

Anyway who better to comment on this recent development in our house then my all knowing blog stalkers!

Brides, did your brothers get freaked out by your Barbies growing up?

Moms did you ever have your boys come screaming and running out of a room because it was full of naked Barbies?

Let me know in the comments.

I was thinking about Barbies just the other day. I really wanted some growing up, but we were too poor to afford them (or maybe it was just because my mom is sort of a hippie and they didn’t jive with her views on femininity and body image; I’ll have to ask her). Then we got a bunch of hand-me-downs from some friends and I finally owned a few Barbies. But by then I was like eight or nine and too old for them. So we don’t have any "naked Barbie" stories. :( But I love the swimsuits!

I love what an ethnically inclusive Barbie collection Sarah has! All that’s missing is "Eats When She’s Depressed Barbie". :)

we actually try and get barbies of all colors. we want sara to realize that it’s not just white women that are expected to be tall skinny and bosomy, but women from all over the world should look like that. red and yellow black and white, they are skinny in his sight.

is it sad that I know one of those barbies is the Jasmine barbie?? love the swim suits though, its much better than naked, when we were little my little brother would purposely take all their clothes off because he knew how much it bothered me! He would set them all over the barbie house I had Naked, and I really do remember coming into the room everytime after he did it and just scream i was so mad!

I was sitting in the 2nd row at our little conservative Church of God, when I decided to change Malibu Barbie’s clothes from a prom dress into a sparkly evening gown…and the preacher (who happened to be my 2nd cousin that Sunday) stopped his sermon and said "Put some clothes on that thing! We are in church and should be MODEST!". It scarred me. That was the last day I played with Barbies. (Sad but true.)

Alex! So I’ve been meaning to write and say hello! I have your biz card, but not next to me. I remembered your web addy and typed it in. And somehow stumbled upon this Barbie post (while exploring your family section)…and I HAD to comment!

1st of all I have to say "Hallelujah" to the sharpie swimsuit collection! I love the alliteration you have going on in this post (Barenaked Barbies…the phrase "plastic p*rn" just popped into my brain). What is the deal with naked barbies? Growing up my parents didn’t buy me Barbies, but a friend’s parents did. And then when she grew of of Barbies, I got all of her hand-me-downs. And they would be naked. The stash got passed down to my younger sister, and then they became Be-headed Barbies.

Just recently, our neighbors passed down a big garbage bag full of some Barenaked Barbies to my 2-year old daughter. She never got a chance to get ahold of them. We sold the whole lot at a friend’s garage sale. Some peeps showed up and bought them all up. Amazed me…I wouldn’t have paid for them at all! I think we sold them for 50 cents each.

So the Sharpie Swimsuits are pretty fashionable. You guys did a great job!
