15 Engagement Session Ideas

Couples are always asking me this question:
“What should we do for our engagement session?”
That always turns into me asking them this question:
“What do you like to do?”

You see, I feel like whatever it is you like to do then that’s what we should do. Just because you are engaged does not mean you need to go walk on the railroad tracks. You are not a train conductor. Step AWAY from the train tracks. Here are just a few things that some of my couples have done on their session.

What up party people? You know what time it is. It’s Top 10 time. That’s right, it’s time to take a quick look back at 2010 and see what some of the best images were. We will be looking at a 5 categories this week and we are kicking it off with some smoking hot engagement images.

Quick run down of the rules. You can vote on each category once. There will be a new category every day this week. Then the polls are closed and the winners will be announced Jan 17th. What To Wear To Your Engagement Session

One of the questions I often get asked is “What should we wear?” Rather than continue to answer it over and over I figured I’d throw out a little post on the topic. Let’s start with what you should NOT wear.

Here is a shot I took back in 2006 when I was starting out.

I’m the one who told them to wear blue jeans and black. That’s what I thought you were “supposed” to wear if you were engaged and being photographed. The official uniform of engaged people.

Last year I took a family photo of them and we tweaked the outfit a bit.

Obviously the adorably cute baby helps, but having them dress in “normal people clothes” also makes the photo look more genuine.

My standard advice is wear what you would typically wear if you wanted to look good. Don’t go overboard, but at the same time don’t show up for your session in the clothes you rolled out of bed in. Try stuff that looks good together, but avoid matchy-matchy outfits at all costs. I once refused to shoot a couple who showed up in white and khaki. OK I’m kidding with that last sentence but I wish I could.

Jamie & Steven | Movies

One of the things I always do is ask couples “What do you like to do together?”

Some boat, some fight, some roller skate. Jamie & Steven LOVE them some movies so we busted into the Alamo Draft House theater in Austin and shot away. Major major thanks to them for giving us the run of the pace. They are located in a few cities in Texas and are totally worth looking into if you like movies.

Since basically EVERY movie coming out now is in 3D we had to get some with glasses. I can’t wait to see hollywood rerelease The Notebook in 3D.

For all my photographer friends who are wondering how I lit this shot it’s pretty basic. Super giant bright backlight + 40×90 ft reflector in front.

They also like to play the video games. Jamie CRUSHED it at Rock Band.

Finally we did some “normal” engagement shots.

Well… “Austin Normal”.

I’m totally looking forward to their September wedding!

Recording Studio + Dirty Limo + Kartwheels = Angela & Spencer

I had such a great time getting to know Angela & Spencer. These two have great chemistry and style so photographing them was something I had been looking forward to for a while. These two met a few years ago down in Austin. Spencer works at a music institute that Angela’s sister was attending. Soon, Angela started to come around and “check in” on her sister’s music. Spencer decided to ask Angela out, and Angela said yes, but she wanted her sisters to come along. Once Spencer left, her sisters pointed out to Angela that he was asking her on a DATE. After a bit a of clarification, the two finally had an “alone” date and they have been giddy and in love ever since.

If you know these two you know that music plays a HUGE role in their lives so the studio where they first met seemed like the perfect place to start the session.

Fun with piano reflections.

Next we headed out into Austin.

Fancy shiny limos are everywhere. This is an Austin-style limo.

These two were a bit nervous in front of the camera. I have no idea why. They are naturals.

Angela hooked us up with private access to this football field in town.

Spencer accomplishes things Colt McCoy & Vince Young never did on the field.

One of my most-est favorite-est ever.

I drove over to Austin for Jamie & Dave’s engagement session and they did not disappoint. I love shooting in different locations and Austin is always willing to provide those.

Skulls because it’s Austin or skulls because it’s October? Yes.
